I believe that when moving to a new country, people should adapt to the cultural habits and traditions of that country. Doing so shows respect to the local community and helps immigrants build better relationships and integrate more smoothly. For example, when I studied in the U.S., I learned to greet people with a smile and small talk, which made me feel more welcomed and connected. Of course, it’s also important to keep your own traditions, but adapting to the new culture can open doors to new friendships, job opportunities, and a deeper understanding of the local society.

例二:

题目:

Some people are willing to spend a lot of money on a vacation so they can do something special. Others prefer to spend very little money on their vacations. Which do you think is better? Why?

I believe it’s better to spend more money on a vacation to do something special.

First of all, special experiences create unforgettable memories. For example, last summer I went skydiving during a trip to New Zealand. It was expensive, but it was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done, and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.

Also, spending more often means better comfort, like staying in a nice hotel or joining a guided tour, which can make the trip much more enjoyable and stress-free. Life is short, and vacations are rare, so I think it’s worth investing in something truly meaningful and memorable.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Because of the increasing popularity of entertainment technology fewer people are taking the time to read books for pleasure. Use details and examples to support your opinion.

I agree that because of the increasing popularity of entertainment technology, fewer people are reading books for pleasure.

First of all, entertainment technology is more convenient. People can easily watch movies, play games, or scroll through social media on their phones anytime, anywhere, which takes much less effort than reading a book.

Second, entertainment options are more varied and exciting. For example, streaming platforms offer thousands of shows and interactive games that are more visually stimulating and immediately engaging than most books. As a result, many people choose those options instead of spending time reading.

例四:

题目:

Some people prefer to work in a company where they have the independence to complete tasks and work out solutions to problems on their own. Others prefer to work in an environment where they are told exactly what they need to do. Which work situation would you prefer and why?

答案:

I prefer to work in an environment where I’m told exactly what to do.

First, it saves time and reduces confusion. When tasks and expectations are clearly outlined, I can focus on getting the job done efficiently without second-guessing myself.

Second, it lowers stress, especially when I’m new to a job or working on something unfamiliar. Having clear instructions helps me avoid mistakes and feel more confident. Overall, I believe that structured guidance leads to better performance, especially in team settings where coordination is important.

例五:

题目:

Some people prefer to shop regularly at a store that is close and convenient to them, even though it might be expensive. Others prefer to shop regularly at a store with the lowest prices, even if it is far away. Which do you prefer? Use details and examples to explain your opinion.

答案:

I prefer to shop at a store that is close and convenient, even if it’s a bit more expensive. It saves me a lot of time and energy, especially when I need something quickly. For example, if I run out of groceries in the middle of the week, I can easily walk to the nearby store instead of driving far. The convenience is worth the extra cost for me.

I prefer to shop at a store with the lowest prices, even if it’s farther away. In the long run, saving money really adds up, especially for daily necessities. For example, I usually do my weekly shopping at a discount supermarket that’s 20 minutes away, and I often save a lot compared to nearby stores. It’s worth the extra effort.

The proposal in the letter suggests that the university should ban students from sleeping in the library because it takes up study space and gives visitors a bad impression. However, the man disagrees with this idea. First, he argues that there are always enough places to sit and study, even if the couches are taken. He says the tables and chairs are still available and comfortable enough. Second, he disagrees with the concern about campus visitors. He shares his own experience, saying that when he visited the university, seeing students asleep in the library made him feel they were hardworking and dedicated, just taking short breaks before getting back to studying.

例二:

The woman expresses her opinion about the suggestion described in the letter. State her opinion and the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.

信件:

Letter to the University Newspaper

I am a student who does not own a computer, so I depend on going to the computer lab to type and print all my papers. The problem is that whenever I arrive at the lab, all the computers are already taken and I wind up spending a long time waiting. I suggest we establish a sign-up sheet system that allows students to sign up for and reserve one-hour time slots in advance. This would increase efficiency and save students’ valuable time. It would also reduce the noise from people waiting in the hall outside the lab.

(woman) You know, this new system he proposed is just isn’t going to work.

(man) No? I’ve heard the lines at the lab get really long.

(woman) Maybe, but the method he proposed is way too rigid. I mean, if you put a limit on time then no one’s gonna be able to finish their work.

(man) Yeah, with only an hour?

(woman) And let’s say they don’t finish, when their time’s up they’ll have to interrupt their work, leave, then come back later. That’s inconvenient and inefficient.

(man) Yeah I see what you mean.

(woman) And about the noise, does he seriously think it’s not going to be noisy with the new system?

(man) How’s that?

(woman) Let’s say someone shows up late for their time slot so the next person has already sat down. Well, the two of them are gonna start arguing about who’s entitled to be there.

(man) That could get pretty loud.

(woman) Exactly, the way it is now the noise is just coming from the hall. But with the sign-up sheet, there’re bound to be a lot of loud disagreements right in the room.

The woman disagrees with the suggestion in the letter about setting up a sign-up sheet system for the computer lab. She gives two main reasons for her opinion.

First, she thinks the system is too rigid. With only one hour per person, many students won’t be able to finish their work. If their time runs out, they’ll have to stop in the middle of their work and come back later, which she believes is inefficient and inconvenient.

Second, she argues that the new system wouldn’t reduce noise. Instead, it might cause more arguments inside the lab. For example, if someone shows up late for their reserved time and another person is already using the computer, they might start arguing over who has the right to be there. This could actually make the room even noisier than it is now. So overall, she believes the new system would cause more problems than it solves.

The professor illustrates the concept of open source development with the example of a small electric car company.

At first, the company struggled because their cars were expensive and inefficient. The batteries needed to power them were hard to design—they had to be lightweight and store a lot of energy, but technology at the time wasn’t advanced enough. So instead of keeping their battery designs secret, the company shared them with other car companies.

This open source approach allowed competitors to suggest improvements, which led to cheaper and more efficient batteries. As a result, all the companies involved were able to sell more electric cars. This shows how open source development helps companies work together to solve complex problems and improve their products.

例二:

Explain how the professor’s experience in the café illustrates the concept of a sweeping generalization.

文案:

Sweeping Generalization We often like to formulate ideas or principles that help us make decisions. For example, we may create one general principle, or rule, that we then apply to many different situations. But in this process we may make an error in reasoning, or thinking, if we ignore exceptions to that rule, that is, when we try to apply one general rule to all situations. This error in reasoning is known as a sweeping generalization. It is a mistake to apply one general rule to every situation because most general rules have exceptions in certain circumstances.

听力

(male professor)

I think most people would accept the social rule that we shouldn’t shout in public, especially at total strangers. Shouting in public is considered rude and, well, nobody likes being shouted at. That said, let me tell you a story. I was in a crowded café one day and as I got up to leave, I very absentmindedly left my backpack there. All of my stuff was in my backpack: my wallet, my keys, my papers, everything.

Now, uh, you have to keep in mind that there were a lot of people in the café, including some who saw me leave my backpack there. About fifteen minutes later, I realized that I didn’t have my bag. So I immediately rushed back to the café and saw that my backpack was still at the table. Now, the woman who had been at the table next to me was still there. She said that she was glad that I had returned for my bag. She’d seen me leave it there and thought of saying something, but she didn’t want to shout at me and disturb all the people in the café. But you know, I would’ve preferred being shouted at in the café. I also don’t think the other people in the café would’ve minded the temporary disturbance if you’re yelling, considering the situation.

The professor’s story in the café illustrates the concept of a sweeping generalization.

He explains that, in general, it’s considered rude to shout in public, and most people try to follow this social rule. However, the woman in the café made the mistake of applying this rule too strictly. When she saw the professor accidentally leave his backpack behind, she chose not to shout at him because she didn’t want to disturb others.

But in this case, shouting would’ve been helpful and completely appropriate, since it could have prevented him from losing his wallet, keys, and important papers. By applying the general rule that “shouting is always rude” to every situation without considering the exception, she made a sweeping generalization. This shows that while rules can guide behavior, blindly following them in every situation can lead to poor decisions.

The professor explains two benefits of thermoregulation in plants using the examples of the skunk cabbage and the lotus flower.

First, thermoregulation helps plants survive in cold weather. The skunk cabbage, for example, sprouts early in the spring when it’s still snowy. Unlike other plants that may freeze and die, it generates heat to keep its leaves and flowers warm, even melting the snow around it. This prevents cell damage from freezing temperatures.

Second, thermoregulation helps with reproduction. The lotus flower stays warm to attract insects, which are drawn to heat because they need it to fly. The insects land on the warm flower, get covered in pollen, and then carry it to other lotus plants, helping with pollination.

Using the examples of ducks and crocodiles from the lecture, explain two ways communication before hatching helps animals to survive.

听力

(female professor) So we know many animals communicate with each other, but did you know that animals that hatch from eggs sometimes communicate while they’re still inside their shells? The unhatched animals make noises that communicate that they’re ready to hatch; break out of their eggs. And this communication plays an important role in helping the young survive.

One way is when there are multiple eggs in the nest it’s important that all the eggs hatch at the same time. This is because some mothers leave the nest soon after the babies hatch. If babies hatch late, the mother would leave them behind. And these babies won’t survive. But by communicating to each other, unhatched animals help ensure that all the eggs hatch at the same time, so none get left behind. Ducks provide a good example, when one baby duck is ready to hatch, it communicates to the other ducks in the nest by making loud clicking noises, sort of saying “let’s get ready to hatch”. The other baby ducks in the nest respond with clicking noises of their own, spreading the message around. This way, all the baby ducks get the signal to hatch at the same time and they all leave the nest with the mother, swim after her into a pond, say.

Another way that communication before hatching is good for survival is that it prompts mothers to help with the baby’s hatching. The noises communicate to the mother that they’re about to hatch, sort of signal to the mother to help them. For example, crocodiles. Crocodiles lay their eggs in mud, cover the eggs in mud. And just before the baby crocodiles hatch, they scratch on the insides of their eggs to communicate to the mother. The mother responds to these scratching sounds by removing the mud that’s covering the eggs, cleaning off this mud is critical for the baby’s survival. Without the mother’s help, the heavy mud covering the eggs would make it difficult for the babies to free themselves from the shells and emerge from the eggs.

The lecture explains two ways communication before hatching helps animals survive, using ducks and crocodiles as examples.

First, for ducks, communication ensures that all the eggs hatch at the same time. When one baby duck is ready to hatch, it makes loud clicking noises to signal the others. The rest respond with similar sounds, helping the whole group coordinate and hatch together. This is important because if some hatch late, they might get left behind when the mother leaves the nest, and they wouldn’t survive alone.

Second, with crocodiles, communication before hatching helps the mother assist in the hatching process. Baby crocodiles scratch the inside of their eggs to signal to the mother that they’re ready to come out. The mother then removes the mud covering the eggs. This is crucial because without her help, the heavy mud would make it hard for the babies to break out and survive.
